چکیده

Sir: We were interested to read the paper by Armstrong et a1 (1997) on drug-induced movement disorders in relation to the CYP2D6 genotype. We would agree that this important polymorphism may well be a contributory factor in more chronic druginduced movement disorders. G. D. I. Bates Blrm~ngham Children's Hospital. Kiovrza Department of B~ochemlstry, University of Birm~ngham, Edgbaston, Birm~ngham be earlier for married women than for married men. The same relation holds for singles. But, as above, these differences are due to a trival demographic effect. If there is a real association between gender and schizophrenia in the sense that onset is later for women, then this difference is reduced when comparing married women with married men and single women with single men. Thus differences in the age structures between married and single persons in the population explain, at least in part, the effects of marital status and gender on age at onset, described by ~ a b l e n s k ~ & ole.-The differences in age at onset between developing and developed countries may be anributed to different demographic structures in these countries. We do not deny these effects, but to disentangle demographic effects from real effects the age structures of the underlying population must be taken into account when analysing the data.

Hyperprolactinemia and CYP2D6, DRD2 and HTR2C genes polymorphism in patients with schizophrenia

Introduction: Hyperprolactinemia is a common serious side effect of antipsychotic medications that are currently used in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia. Pharmacogenetic approaches offer the possibility of identifying patient-specific biomarkers for predicting the risk of this side effect. We investigated a possible relationship between variants (SNPs) in genes for cytochrome 2D6 (...

5-Hydroxy tryptamine transporter (5HTT) gene promoter region polymorphism in anxiety and depressive disorders

Background :5HTTLPR polymorphism (5- Hydroxytryptamine transporter linked promoter region polymorphism) is the most widely studied genetic variant in psychiatry. The present study is a modest effort at ascertaining the role of 5HT transporter linked promoter region polymorphism (5HTTLPR) in anxiety and depressive disorders in Kashmir (India). The aim of this study was to examine 5-Hydroxy tryp...

No Evidence for Association between Tyrosine Hydroxylase Gene Val81Met Polymorphism and Susceptibility to Tardive Dyskinesia in Schizophrenia

OBJECTIVE Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is the rate-limiting enzyme in dopamine biosynthesis. Because the TH Val81Met polymorphism is located in the amino-terminal regulatory domain of the tetrameric enzyme, it is a candidate marker for susceptibility to dopamine-related traits. We investigated the hypothesis that TH Val81Met polymorphism can influence susceptibility to tardive dyskinesia (TD) in s...

Neuroprotective Effects of Exercise on Brain Edema and Neurological Movement Disorders Following the Cerebral Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats

Introduction: Cerebral ischemia and reperfusion causes physiological and biochemical changes in the neuronal cells that will eventually lead to cell damage. Evidence indicates that exercise reduces the ischemia and reperfusion-induced brain damages in animal models of stroke. In the present study, the effect of exercise preconditioning on brain edema and neurological movement disorders followin...

Clinical significance of pharmacogenomic studies in tardive dyskinesia associated with patients with psychiatric disorders

Pharmacogenomics is the study of the effects of genetic polymorphisms on medication pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. It offers advantages in predicting drug efficacy and/or toxicity and has already changed clinical practice in many fields of medicine. Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a movement disorder that rarely remits and poses significant social stigma and physical discomfort for the patie...
